For Literacy the children have started their non-fiction texts topic. They have explored different non-fiction texts and familiarised themselves with non-fiction text features.
This week the children have also enjoyed reflecting on their RE learning - and evaluating whether they believed Jesus found it easy or difficult to be a good friend based on various biblical stories they have learnt before the half term. Stilling the storm has been one of their favourite biblical stories.

This week Year 1 have been very busy. In Maths we have been subtracting number. In Literacy we have been writing our own versions of the traditional tale "Little Red Hen". The children have had great fun retelling the story.
We have also been getting creative! We made our very own monsters out of recycled materials, in the style of Michelle Reader. In Music, we have been singing the Banana Rap, where all the animals want the banana but it's out of reach. In the end the elephant tricks the others and gobbles it all up! We have had so much fun singing this amusing song.
We are very proud of the effort the children are putting into their work and enjoying having fun at the same time.
Well done Year 1

It's October already! That also means celebrating Black History Month. This week the children had a black history dance workshop where they learnt African dance routines. They absolutely loved this!

It's been a great start to the month!

The children are continuing to develop their skills this week and we are excited to see how much progress they have already made. They have a good grasp of routines and are showing our CRISP values on a daily basis, especially conduct. They are reinforcing their friendships as well as forging additional relationships2580 with children who are new to school. During Literacy the children have been working on sentence building – creating phonetically correct sentences using capital letters, full stops and adjectives. In Maths the focus we have been investigating number to 30. We have been counting and comparing number, using the vocabulary of greater then, less than and equal to in different contexts. In Geography we have been learning about place. We have identified features in our classroom and put them in the correct places on a map.

Wow, what a great final week of the first half term in Year 1. The children have grown in some many different ways. They have become confident and responsible. It's wonderful to see how many different challenges the children have successfully completed and observe them demonstrating all our school values.
In Maths, we have been learning how to order numbers from smallest to largest and vice versa. We have also been learning ordinal numbers as well!
We wound up our excellent work on traditional tales by acting out the story of the Little Red Hen. The children were excellent narrators and actors. We heard some lovely acting voices and saw fabulous acting.
Children have been investigating materials in Science and were describing the properties of a variety of objects. Were they rough or smooth, waterproof or absorbent? Children even confidently used the word opaque to describe object that they could not see through!
We have all had a fantastic half term. The Year 1 teaching staff are very impressed with all your successes over the past few weeks.
We wish you all a happy break and can't wait to see you refreshed after the holiday.

The children have had an amazing week with lots of exciting activities.
During Literacy the children have been working on traditional stories. We have read a wide range of stories and used adjectives to describe the character of the witch. Children have been pushing themselves by using expanded noun phrases in some sentences.
In Maths we have been exploring addition. We have identified all the different words that mean the same as the word ‘add’. Using the part-part whole method, the children are beginning to identify two numbers that can be added together to make a given number.
This week has been part of Black History month, when we celebrate the achievements of different people from the past and present. These people have made a difference because they have spoken out about unfairness. In Year 1 we have been learning about Rosa Parks and how she refused to give up her seat on a bus.
Another fabulous week Year 1. You continue to impress your teachers.

The children have started a new topic in literacy and we are now focussing on traditional tales. They have enjoyed listening to a variety of them this week and have been describing these through sentence building using conjunction 'and'.
During Maths we have been working on our number bonds to 10. The children have enjoyed singing songs to these to help remember them as well as working practically with ten frames and counters.
We also wanted to say thank you to our parents who attended the phonics workshop. It's always appreciated and vitally important that you continue to support your children in developing their reading skills. Any questions around this please ask.

The children have shown maturity and growth this week and we are proud of their efforts in year 1. We know it's a huge step up from reception and we really are impressed with them trying hard to follow rules and routines.
During Literacy the children have been working on writing captions - focussing on phonetic sounds and letter formation too.
For Maths the focus has been place value and children have been working with numbers to 20.
During science the children have started a weather diary which they will be updating throughout the year - helping them learn about seasonal changes. They will also observe changes to the trees over the seasons.
