The children have had an amazing week with lots of exciting activities.

During Literacy the children have been working on traditional stories. We have read a wide range of stories and used adjectives to describe the character of the witch. Children have been pushing themselves by using expanded noun phrases in some sentences.

In Maths we have been exploring addition. We have identified all the different words that mean the same as the word ‘add’. Using the part-part whole method, the children are beginning to identify two numbers that can be added together to make a given number.

This week has been part of Black History month, when we celebrate the achievements of different people from the past and present. These people have made a difference because they have spoken out about unfairness. In Year 1 we have been learning about Rosa Parks and how she refused to give up her seat on a bus.

Another fabulous week Year 1. You continue to impress your teachers.

The children have started a new topic in literacy and we are now focussing on traditional tales. They have enjoyed listening to a variety of them this week and have been describing these through sentence building using conjunction 'and'.

During Maths we have been working on our number bonds to 10. The children have enjoyed singing songs to these to help remember them as well as working practically with ten frames and counters.

We also wanted to say thank you to our parents who attended the phonics workshop. It's always appreciated and vitally important that you continue to support your children in developing their reading skills. Any questions around this please ask.

The children have shown maturity and growth this week and we are proud of their efforts in year 1. We know it's a huge step up from reception and we really are impressed with them trying hard to follow rules and routines.

During Literacy the children have been working on writing captions - focussing on phonetic sounds and letter formation too.

For Maths the focus has been place value and children have been working with numbers to 20.

During science the children have started a weather diary which they will be updating throughout the year - helping them learn about seasonal changes. They will also observe changes to the trees over the seasons.

It's October already! That also means celebrating Black History Month. This week the children had a black history dance workshop where they learnt African dance routines. They absolutely loved this!

During Literacy the children have been listening to a variety of traditional tales and writing character and setting descriptions using adjectives. Most children have begun writing sentences using conjunction 'and' which has been fantastic to see.

For Math's we have been focusing on one more/one less and subitising numbers within 10. There's been a lot of practical work involved, and the children have enjoyed using the ten frames and counters to reinforce their learning.

For Art they have made fabulous collages using a variety of materials and applying various techniques such as ripping and cutting. They have been so creative!

It's been a great start to the month!

The children are continuing to develop their skills this week and we are excited to see how much progress they have already made. They have a good grasp of routines and are showing our CRISP values on a daily basis, especially conduct.  They are reinforcing their friendships as well as forging additional relationships2580 with children who are new to school. During Literacy the children have been working on sentence building – creating phonetically correct sentences using capital letters, full stops and adjectives. In Maths the focus we have been investigating number to 30. We have been counting and comparing number, using the vocabulary of greater then, less than and equal to in different contexts. In Geography we have been learning about place.  We have identified features in our classroom and put them in the correct places on a map.

Well done Year 1.  Your teachers are very proud of you.
